Frequently Asked Questions
What is APS (Admission Point Score)?
APS is a score used by South African universities to determine whether you meet the minimum requirements for admission. It's calculated by converting your matric subject percentages to levels (1-7) and adding your best 6 subjects (excluding Life Orientation).
How is APS calculated?
Your APS is calculated in 4 steps: (1) Convert each subject percentage to a level using the NSC 7-point scale, (2) Exclude Life Orientation, (3) Take your 6 highest levels, (4) Add them together. The maximum APS is 42 (6 subjects × 7 points each).
Why is Life Orientation excluded from APS?
Most South African universities exclude Life Orientation from APS calculations because it's considered a non-academic subject. However, you still need to pass it to receive your National Senior Certificate.
What APS do I need for university?
APS requirements vary by university and program. Typically: Engineering needs 32-36+, Medicine needs 36+, Commerce needs 28-32, and Arts/Humanities needs 24-28. Check your target university's specific requirements.
Can I improve my APS score?
Yes! Focus on improving your marks in your 6 best subjects. Each level increase (e.g., from 5 to 6) adds 1 point to your APS. Use the ToGrad app to track your progress and set study goals.
